The following are typical terms that you should know before you begin to work with a web designer or to build your own website. 

bot

Abbreviation for robot. (See spider)

browser

Software used to view web pages. (e.g. MS Explorer, Netscape, Firefox)

checkbox

A form field used for selection of options which may be  checked or not checked.

computer

A machine that includes a central processing unit, which performs calculations; a display, for communicating information to the user; and input devices (often a keyboard and mouse) to allow the user to enter information.

crawler

(see bot, spider)

database

Software that stores data records in organized categories. The data can be sorted and viewed in many different ways, making for powerful analytical capabilities.

directory

When used regarding the Internet, an online listing of web sitelinks, often categorized by topic, that users search for relevant web site content. ( Ex. DMOZ, Yahoo! ) Entries are entered into directories by people, as opposed to search engines which use a program (spider, crawler, or bot) to searche the Web and index the web pages as found.

drop-down menu

A mechanism that allows for selection from a specified set of options.

form

A section of a web page containing various fields. The user enters data into the input fields or selects from options, and that data can then be used to update a database, interact with scripts, or cause some other outcome.

HTML

Acronym for HyperText Markup Language, used to format web pages for displaying - especially on the Web. This language allows for linking one file to another.

hyperlink

(see also Link) The fundamental feature of the Internet, hyperlinks are used to link from a location in one file to a location in a remote file.. By clicking on the link in the current file, the remote file is displayed.

interface

A screen that allows the user to interact with software. Regarding the web, this includes the navigation and links, form fields, buttons, menus, etc.

Internet

The electronic network that provides for the connections among all the various computers on a global scale using the TCP/IP protocol.

link

(also see hyperlink)

mouseover

 Text or images, often used to designate a link, that, changes size, color, etc. on a screen when pointed to by a mouse icon.

online

For the purposes of the Web, connected to the Internet.

platform

The combination of operating system (e.g. MS Windows, Linux, etc) and web site browser software (e.g. MS Explorer, Netscape, Firefox, etc.) utilized by a web site visitor.

programming

The development of scripts or creation of functional logic. Regarding the web, programming creates interactivity between the web site and the site visitor.

protocol

A common platform with which computers communicate

radio button

A form field used for selection between options where only one may be selected.

scripting

(see Programming)

search engine optimization (SEO)

Refining the content and HTML code of a web page so that the page may be indexed by search engine robots.

search engine

are usually web pages that allow users to search the Internet for relevant web site content that has been indexed in a database

SEO

(see Search Engine Optimization)

spider

(see also bot, crawler) A program that searches the Web, collecting and indexing web page content for search engine storage

submit button

The element of a web form that, when clicked, sends data to the appropriate database application on the web server.

user

An person who interfaces with a computer screen to perform some outcome.

web marketing

Utilizing search engine optimization (SEO) and web site submission to directories (Yahoo., DMOZ, etc.) to maximize the exposure of a web site on the Web.

web page

An online HTML file that displays via browser softeware (e.g., MSIE, Netscape, etc.)

web site

A collection of one or multiple linked web pages

web browser

Software used to view web pages. They include MS Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox, Opera, etc.

World Wide Web

The software layer on the Internet utilizing HTTP protocol and hypertext markup language to allow for shared data in a web page.
