You probably already
know that having Web Presence is one of the most
important investments that you will make in your
business. Many people, these days, decide upon a domain
name and website before they do their first business
plan.
Visitors will judge you and your business or
organization by your website. Your website will
represent you and your business in your absence, around
the clock and around the globe – whether you want it to
do so or not.
Does this mean that you must spend extravagantly to have
web presence? Absolutely not. However, you should budget
realistically.
If you will be developing your own web presence, be sure
you research thoroughly to avoid hidden costs. For
example, you will be contracting for your own hosting
service so be sure you understand the concept of excess
bandwidth and server capacity, and be clear about what
kind of support you can expect – or not – when you begin
to upload, download and manage web files on the server,
load and test software, etc. Otherwise, you could
quickly find yourself hiring a third-party technician to
rescue you. And, then, there goes your savings.
If you are working with a web developer, have a frank
discussion about budget and let them know your budget
range and limitations. It is a waste of your time to lay
out a wish list and receive a 5-figure estimate when you
were expecting 3-figures!
A good web developer will be able to work within
whatever budget you specify; but you must realize that
the result will still be a function of the budget. So
don’t fail to discuss possible options and alternatives
before the final plan is created.
